When You Polish A Stone You Make a Ruby

With Support of Comune di Roma and Wunderkammern Gallery, Piazza San Lorenzo in Lucina (in central Rome) was opened for installation and performances in concert with the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Three months prior to the show cardboard was collected nightly on the streets of Rome with the intention of being used to create a temporary wall closing off the Piazza.

The project was realized by 3 Bangladeshi men who both collected the cardboard, initiated the construction and suggested the public collaboration. The performance was as an evolution. The public who participated in the building of a wall did so by interacting with the Bangladeshi men.

The wall of cardboard was a simple paradox between cultural tensions in Rome, and visible barriers that still exist there. The act of building a wall with the public was a means to create discourse around these tensions.
